This course aims to provide graduate students in linguistics and second language education with a comprehensive overview of the field of applied linguistics from cognitive and sociocultural accounts of language in preparation for linguistic research to solve communication-related problems.

This course takes a multi-disciplinary approach to cover topics from its traditional foundations in second language teaching and learning to specific topics such as intercultural communication, endangered language documentation and conservation, digital humanities, translation, forensic linguistics, lexicography, and language pathology. In addition to an overview of the theories and practices of applied linguistics, we also discuss the most current accounts of Chines applied linguistics, focusing on Chinese culture and L2 teaching pedagogy and digital humanities by exploring how to create chatbots and VR stories to facilitate second language teaching and learning.
