Contemporary Chinese Society in Transition當代中國社會轉變
一、課程概述
This course provides an overview of the social changes in contemporary China, especially since the economic reforms began in 1978. Using empirical case studies, the aim is for students to identify both the internal and external forces that drive such economic and social changes, such as to what extent capitalism and the rapid economic development have changed the society in China, the concerns and policies from Mao to Post-Mao, the reorganization of society in transition, and ways in which people in society address their needs and identities in daily lives during the processes of reforms and globalization. The topics include the market reform, inequalities, popular culture, media, gender, family, etc. By the end of this course, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge on contemporary Chinese society and critically cite empirical data in explaining relevant social issues.
