1.Taiwan Indigenous peoples are an integral part of the Austronesian cultural heritage and are also among the key subjects protected under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). Therefore, Indigenous cultures are not only valuable national assets but also a crucial bridge connecting Taiwan with the international community.
2.The marriage and family systems of Taiwan Indigenous peoples exhibit rich diversity. Based on traditional family structures, they can generally be categorized into patrilineal extended families, patrilineal nuclear families, matrilineal families, and bilateral lineal families. This course uses these family structures as a framework to examine how different Indigenous groups have developed distinctive approaches to family organization, marriage systems, gender roles, family relationships, and family life-cycle tasks. The course aims to cultivate students' understanding of family issues from the perspectives of diverse ethnic and cultural groups.
3.Taiwanese society has long held many stereotypes about Indigenous families. By exploring the impacts of colonial policies on Indigenous families, as well as the ways in which Indigenous peoples living in traditional tribal communities and those residing in urban areas have adapted to social change, this course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the historical and contemporary contexts of Indigenous families in Taiwan.
4.In addition to the 16 officially recognized Indigenous peoples of Taiwan, many unrecognized Plains Indigenous groups continue to advocate for official recognition while working to preserve and revitalize their cultural heritage. Accordingly, the course concludes with the themes of ethnic identity and cultural continuity, encouraging students to appreciate the significance of these ongoing efforts.
