College Chinese: Contemporary Chinese Prose with Writing Practice

Course Objectives and Scope:
Reading is the foundation for the accumulation of knowledge; writing is the medium through which expression is realized. The General Chinese course at National Chung Cheng University centers on classical literary works, offering a series of language courses that balance intellectual depth with the breadth of general education. The curriculum is structured around five core themes: Literary Appreciation, Applied Chinese Writing, Literary Creation, Thought and Culture, and Literary Criticism and Academic Writing. These themes support a diverse range of specialized language courses, including traditional literary analysis, philosophical and logical inquiry, and contemporary creative applications. Upon completing the course, students will not only deepen their humanistic literacy but also cultivate innovative potential in the language industries of the new generation.

Course Objectives and Scope (Unit-Level)
This course aims to guide students in deeply exploring the relationship between the self and the world. Through reading that begins in places distant from oneself—through the eyes of others, across different cultures, identities, emotions, and interwoven life experiences—students are encouraged to re-examine the authentic nature of their own being. Through the writing process—self-narration and emotional reflection—students will find a redemptive force within language.

The course guides students through five thematic units closely tied to human life. Through the theme of "Journey," students are invited to reflect on the spaces they move through, engaging in a process of spatial exploration and introspection. In " Intimacy," the course delves into the complexities of gender identity, love, and desire, examining the intricate interweaving of emotional and physical intimacy. The "Family" unit reexamines the meaning of home, inviting students to rediscover themselves amid the disorientation and entanglements of human relationships. In "Self," the course turns inward, encouraging students to explore their own identities and to seek answers to the question "Who am I?" through the redemptive lens of childhood and personal growth. The course culminates in the unit on "Everyday Life," capturing the quiet fullness of ordinary living, the existential disruptions brought by illness and death, and the symbolic imagery found in animals, plants, and everyday objects.
True reading does not pander to our emotions—it becomes a medium through which we discover more about ourselves, leading us into unfamiliar emotional and philosophical terrain. These course contents are designed to help students more holistically explore their place in the world and reflect on the meaning and value of life from diverse perspectives.

The five teaching units are as follows:
• Unit 1: Journey – Spatial Explorers
• Unit 2: Intimacy – Gender Identity, Love, and Desire
• Unit 3: Family – Images and Constructs of Home
• Unit 4: Self – Who Am I? Redemption in Childhood and Growth
• Unit 5: Everyday Life – The Mundane, Illness, Death, and Object Imagery
