This course provides an introduction to the economics of money, banking, and monetary policy. The first part of the course covers the financial system and the determination of interest rates, including present value, the behavior of interest rates, and the risk and term structure. The second part examines banking: the management of financial institutions, the role of asymmetric information in financial structure, and the causes and consequences of financial crises. The third part turns to central banking and monetary policy, covering the money supply process, the tools and conduct of monetary policy, and the quantity theory of money. Particular attention is given to the operations of Taiwan's central bank alongside the Federal Reserve, and course concepts are applied to current financial news and data throughout the semester.
