This course is an English-taught class that aims at two objectives: (1) to help students familiarize English expressions (vocabulary and phrases) in diverse sports scenarios (2) to help students practice English speaking skill using sports terms learned in class. As sports-major students, it is essential to be familiar with sports terms in the academic field as well as in daily activities. Hence, language immersion will be the chief pedagogy of this course that allows students to engage in useful expression of sports terms through listening to English live broadcasts, and watching YouTube channels or TED Talks.
This course is divided into 11 topics on diverse sports events. Each week in the first hour of class, the instructor will lecture on one topic along with real-life English conversation. In the second hour of class, students are expected to work in team to practice English conversation featuring specific sports scenario or sports event. At the end of the semester, students are required to produce either an English short film (10 mins) or an on-stage representation in order to simulate sports event using the terms and conversation they’ve learned in class.
