Social theory is an all-encompassing field of study essential to all budding social scientists. Regardless of whichever discipline one is from social theory should be considered the building block upon which all manner academic inquiry should stem from. In this course we will be delving into the works of some of the most influential thinkers, forming the foundation of what we refer to today as social thought. Through their readings we will question the very notions of the social world we inhabit. What is the meaning of society? What is the meaning of culture? We will investigate the notions and ideas brought forth by writers such as Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber as well as a whole host of other thinkers to ponder on the ideas that have allowed us to think more deeply about the social worlds we inhabit. As we gain greater familiarity with the material, the class will also engage students in theory building, a core practice in the social sciences.
