Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics can be considered the first dedicated treatise on ethics in the history of Western ethics. Its purpose is not to help people advance their theoretical knowledge about ethics, but to help them improve their practical lives. The central theme of this work is "happiness." To attain happiness, individuals must understand what virtue entails, learn to cultivate moral character, and integrate these virtues into the fabric of their lives. This course guides students through a careful, book-by-book reading of Nicomachean Ethics, helping them grasp the fundamental arguments and methodological approach of Aristotle's ethics.
