中正大學課程大綱
Selected Reading of Travel Writings and Creative Writing閱讀旅行文選與創意寫作
一、課程概述
What is the relationship between travel and memory? How is the experience of space/place influenced by gender, class, cultural and national identities? In what sense is travel narrative a genre that Mikhail Bakhtin and Roland Barthes recognized as more ideologically saturated than almost any other form of verbal representation? This course will begin with examinations of the literary criticism in travel, and surveys of the history of English travel literature. The goals of this course are three folded: firstly, to make students understand the characteristics of English travel narrative; secondly, to appreciate travel literature in Taiwan urban place and the country area; thirdly, to discuss travel narrative as another mode of displacement that allows writers to explore the nature of his/her own desire by means of a detour through otherness, and further to see travel narrative as a way to re-conceptualize and problematize the question of identities.
