Fantasy Literature and Films奇幻文學與電影
一、課程概述
Course Description:
This course aims to orient students into reading various representative fantasy writers (William Shakespeare, Lewis Carrol, and Franz Kafka). Reading materials include literary texts which cover various sub-genres of fantasy (romance, science fiction, the gothic, fairy tale, magic realism) and are analytically, critically accessed by way of lectures and discussions with a view to not only psychological but also social and political aspects.
Three fantasy works will be studied respectively:
1) William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream
2) Lewis Carrol’s Alice Adventures in Wonderland
3) Franz Kafka’s “Metamorphosis”
To enhance student’s reading area, we will watch the film adaptations of these literary works and see what is at stake in each director’s agenda.

Course Requirements
1.Each student must attend the class regularly. I will call your name when the class starts after five minutes
2. Each student just has four times to apply leaving throughout the whole semester; over the quota, except for family or medial emergency, you should not be absent without providing any proofs of leaving within two weeks. 全學期可以提請假四次,之後請假除了家庭或醫療以及重要事故 (含公假) ,必須提供相關證明方與准假。缺席者限2周內提出申請銷假, 逾時不予受理。Proof of leave must be submitted (within a week) with a 250-word report in English to explain your absence. Lateness for class may be considered as absence without leave

Assessment and Grade Distribution (tentative)

Participation: 10%. One Test: 30%
Group Report: 30% Final Paper: 30%
