Fantasy Literature and Films奇幻文學與電影
一、課程概述
Course Descriptions:

This course aims to orient students into reading various representative fantasy works by three writers (William Shakespeare, Lewis Carrol, and Virginia Woolf). Reading materials include literary texts which cover various sub-genres of fantasy (romance, fairy tale, magic realism) and are analytically, critically accessed by way of lectures and discussions with a view to not only psychological but also social and political aspects.
Three fantasy books+one fantasy film will be studied respectively:
1) William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night’s Dream
2) Lewis Carrol's Alice Adenture in Wonderland
3) Virginia Woolf's Orlando
4) Maleficent (2014), directed by Robert Stromberg

To enhance student’s reading area, we will watch the film adaptations of these literary works and see what is at stake in each director’s agenda.

Assessment and Grade Distribution
Participation: 10%. One Test: 30%
Group Report: 30% Final Paper: 30%


Course Requirement:
1.Each student must attend the class regularly. I will call your name when the class starts after five minutes
2. Each student just has four times to apply leaving throughout the whole semester; over the quota, except for family or medial emergency, you should not be absent without providing any proofs of leaving within two weeks. 全學期可以提請假四次,之後請假除了家庭或醫療以及重要事故 (含公假) ,必須提供相關證明方與准假。Proof of leave must be submitted (within a week) with a 250-word report in English to explain your absence. Lateness for class may be considered as absence without leave.
3. Each student will have to take one test, group report, and write a term paper of 3 pages (Times New Roman 12, 1.5 space)

The course is designed to train students to conduct close textual analysis and form critical perspectives with which to discuss the novels and their film representations.
***To ensure teaching quality, only "25 students"s are permitted to register in this class. No more members will be considered.
