Lu Xun (1881–1936) is a central figure in the formation of modern literature in East Asia. His writings powerfully register the profound social, cultural, and intellectual transformations that China underwent in the early twentieth century, and they offer a sustained engagement with the promises and crises of modernity. This course places Lu Xun within a broader East Asian intellectual context in which thinkers confronted the shared challenge of modernity—often described as the effort to critically respond to, resist, or move beyond Western models of modernization.
Focusing primarily on Lu Xun’s fiction, the course examines works from A Call to Arms (Nahan), Hesitation (Panghuang), and Old Tales Retold (Gushi Xinbian), while also incorporating his essays and the prose-poetry collection Wild Grass (Yecao). Through close reading and discussion, students will explore Lu Xun’s distinctive literary techniques as well as the philosophical and social questions that animate his writing.
Particular attention will be given to Lu Xun’s reflections on individualism and his critique of “national character,” analyzed within the broader framework of global modernity. By engaging closely with both texts and historical context, the course aims to help students develop a nuanced understanding of modern Chinese literature while strengthening their skills in critical reading, interpretation, and comparative thinking.
