Western Drama: Henrik Ibsen西方戲劇:易卜生
一、課程概述
This course is collaborated with the “Drama, Creativity, and Artistic Visions” program hosted by the College of Humanities. It is designed to combine play reading, film appreciation, oral training, and literary criticism and writing, with the aims to study the works of the Father of Modern Drama, Henrik Ibsen, and to better understand how his works are second to Shakespeare to be frequently performed on the world stage. Before we look at Ibsen’s works, an introduction to the history of western drama and theatre will be offered to orient students with general background knowledge. Subsequent attention will then be given to Ibsen’s social problem plays, The Pillars of Society (1877), A Doll’s House (1879), Ghosts (1881), and An Enemy of the People (1882). Supplementary critical references will be offered to sharpen students’ literary sense and critical analysis for in-class discussion and term paper writing. Fundamental essentials for research matters will be practiced as well so that students can be guided step by step to complete a research term paper. It is expected that the course can better students’ dramatic/theatrical knowledge, critical thinking, literary reading and analysis, and strengthen students’ communication and writing skills in English.
