課程介紹與教學目標 Course Description and Objectives

This course will introduce you to a sample of texts affected by the legacy of Empire and Western Imperialism. We will explore the ways they present the effects of Empire on 19th and 20th century society, with a focus on identity. Postcolonial criticism is one of the most significant developments of the last thirty years. We will consider some of the major theories which have emerged, such as search for a national identity and the various resistance strategies employed by postcolonial writers.

Seminars will be a mix of lecture and class discussion. Additional reading materials and film clips will be provided to aid discussion. There will be additional exercises such as quizzes, presentations (assessed), concept mapping and free writing where appropriate.

Learning Objectives:

1)    Students should be able to compare and contrast features in literature related to Empire and Imperialism.

2)    Students should develop and understanding of and be able to identify central issues of postcolonial theory, such as Orientalism, diaspora, race and national identity, in 20th century literature in English.

3)    Students should be able to reflect and consider the key issues explored and be able to apply and demonstrate that knowledge.

4)    Develop lexicon to be able to discuss issues of postcolonial theory.

5)    Develop analytic essay writing and presentation skills.

課程要求Course Requirements

Students need to bring a pen and pad to make notes. Students are also expected to take a lead in discussions. Students should prepare for each seminar by reading the text or texts set, and making notes and a list of questions about the reading – which will be discussed in class. You should also read some secondary material about the text, as will be indicated on the reading list.

You will also be required to produce a 10-15 minute informative group presentation on one of the texts, which will be assessed (15%).

Homework is also assessed (10%) and will be written responses to texts as noted in the schedule.

The final research essay is the main part of the assessment, and time allocated by the student should reflect this. The essay should be 2,500 words in length. Essays significantly under or over that limit will be penalized.
