本課程為「世界文明經典閱讀(一)」的延續。在第一學期中,我們探討了文明如何被環境、生物、語言等「比個人更大的力量」所建構 。本學期,我們將從Max Weber對現代「理性化」精神的經典分析出發,聚焦於一個新的核心問題:當「合理化」的精神滲透了職業、制度與日常生活,我們作為被這股力量形塑的現代人,該如何重探倫理的可能、自由的界限與認知的框架?

本課設計的重心,在於藉由閱讀這些思想原典,跟著作者的文字「學習他/她如何思考」,進而踏上「我要如何思考」的動腦旅程。每週課程均由同學分組導讀主題文本,教師則引導概念釐清與問題補充,透過討論大量全班與分組討論,同學將練習理解並體會每個思想的複雜與意義。

在第二學期中,我們將從前一學期「比個人更大的力量」主題的延續—《基督新教倫理與資本主義精神》—為起點,開展三條新的問題軸線;每條軸線都將對應數個核心文本,引導同學反思個體在現代世界中的定位:

  • 在一個高度強調理性與規訓的系統中,倫理與自由如何可能?
  • 我們的認知框架,是否決定了我們所能理解的世界?
  • 帶著這些源自西方的思想提問,我們如何在自身的文化脈絡中尋找安放的位置?

同學在這門課中可以學到:

  • 如何閱讀經典思想文本,並理解其歷史背景與論證脈絡;
  • 如何辨識一個想法背後的觀點立場與表達方式;
  • 如何在討論中提出觀點、聆聽差異並共同生成問題;
  • 如何將閱讀視為與他人共同思考的一種訓練方式。

生物醫學近年快速發展,嘗試對全球的醫療保健、農業、製造業、甚至環境能源提出創新且具革命性的解決方案,社會大眾也紛紛賦予極高期待。本課程具備跨領域精神,以STS(科技與社會研究:Science and Technology Studies)為視角,帶領同學認識、討論、與探索生物醫學(Biomedicine)與當代社會的複雜關係。從科學知識到技術應用,生物醫學不只影響與塑造社會價值,社會價值也會進入生物醫學當中。

秉持STS深入知識內涵與技術細節的精神,本課程由三位老師授課,並將生物醫學大致區分為三大面向:基礎知識🧪、技術應用🩺、社會倫理🌏。課程會以「基礎知識→技術應用→社會倫理」為一單元組的方式進行,共分為三大單元(ABC)。每週會有兩位老師共同上課(一主授、一副授),一方面相互支援、溝通、與辯論,另一方面也向同學示範跨越院系的交流與思考。

透過這門課,同學可以:

  • 瞭解生物醫學的基礎科學知識;
  • 初步認識生物醫學的產品應用;
  • 洞察生物醫學的社會倫理議題;
  • 培養跨領域的思考與溝通習慣。
