課程概述 Course Descriptions |
This course delves into the importance of gender and sexuality in literature and culture. It explores how gender identity, sexuality, and societal norms are depicted in literary works ranging from Shakespeare to Angela Carter, with a particular emphasis on LGBTQ+ stories. Through this exploration, the course traces significant advancements in the fields of gender, sexuality, and queer studies. Themes addressed encompass theories of gender, historical and contemporary perspectives on sexuality, expressions of same-sex attraction and identity, narratives of transgender experiences, representations of gender fluidity and idealized forms of gender, explorations of unconventional sexualities, depictions of both anguish and affection, the interplay between gender, sexuality, and literary forms, and literary reactions to gender constructs. By the course's conclusion, students will acquire an understanding of fundamental themes in gender, sexuality, and feminist studies, as well as recognize the pivotal role of gender and sexuality in literature. They will be adept at discerning historical and present attitudes toward gender and sexuality through literary portrayals, and discerning methods by which gender roles and sexual standards are constructed or challenged. Furthermore, they will possess the ability to apply concepts of gender and sexuality when analyzing literary texts and effectively convey ideas pertaining to these concepts. Seminars will be a mix of lecture and class discussion. Additional reading materials and film clips will be provided to aid discussion. There will be additional exercises such as quizzes, presentations (assessed), concept mapping and free writing where appropriate. You will need to bring a pen and pad to make notes, and be prepared to make contributions to discussions. You MUST prepare for each seminar by reading the text or texts set – if you appear to have no knowledge of the text, and are unable to contribute to discussions you may be asked to leave the class and will receive no attendance mark. You should also read some secondary material about the text. You will be required to produce a 20-minute informative group presentation on one of the texts, which will be assessed. |
