College Chinese: Modern Literature and Visual Culture

In 1906, Lu Xun attended a slide show about the Russo-Japanese War at the Sendai Medical School. This experience not only marked a turning point in his decision to abandon medicine for literature but also signaled the initial encounter between Chinese writers and visual media. With the progress of modernization and urbanization, visual media gradually entered the daily lives of the public and reshaped writers’ reflections on literature. Throughout the development of 20th-century Chinese literature, numerous works reveal traces of imagery and visuality across various dimensions of concern. This course examines the impact of visual media on modern writers and their intellectual responses, addressing the following questions: 1. How does modern literature convey a sense of "visuality," and how does it employ technological visuality to respond to modern society? 2. How do contemporary films adapt literary works, using visual techniques to create textual polyphony? Through theoretical readings, historical research, and close textual analysis, the course fosters a dialogue between literary texts, theory, and historical materials to explore these issues.

Mechanically produced visual images—such as photography, slides, and films—offer unprecedented visual perceptions to the public through realistic detail and montage techniques. These media also provide literature with new aesthetic concepts and narrative strategies, forming two mutually referential artistic modes. As Wang Wenxing observes in his essay *Film Is Literature*, the interplay between imagery and literature extends beyond film adaptations of literary works. Visual media, through editing, set design, and sound effects, parallels literary techniques such as chaptering, segmentation, spatial arrangement, and sound imitation. Guided by the theme of “visuality,” this course aims to deepen students’ understanding of “modern literature” and encourage humanistic thinking within the context of modern technological development. The course emphasizes practical teaching methods, focusing on class discussions to cultivate students’ logical reasoning and analytical skills. It also seeks to enhance their ability to transform knowledge or everyday experiences into coherent arguments and effective expression.
