This course will survey some of the major issues and problems in contemporary philosophy of language. Our primary focus will be in three main areas: meaning and reference, contemporary theories of meaning, and semantic skepticism. Along the way, our discussion of these topics will be interwoven with philosophical issues regarding the relationship between language, mind, and reality.

Students will be expected to grasp the key issues and theories involved. Students will be expected to critically engage and evaluate the ideas and arguments presented, critiquing and defending various positions on the core topics.
