Selected works are to show the rich diversity of Celtic myths and Celtic legends across the European continent and Britain. Specific passages will be introduced and discussed in class. There is a tendency in modern revivals of Celtic lore and legend towards prettiness--a falsely romantic approach that conveniently ignores the harsh and often violent nature of Celtic tradition. We will definitely cover some romantic themes, but at the same time we will not omit the battles, the vengeance, and the cruelty. Without these hard edges, beauty and inspiration can become insipid, and lose its value.
