Course Description:
This course will provide selected readings of English novels written traversing a long period of time since the novel’s most dominant era from the eighteenth century to the current day, by several fiction writers who have been celebrated as the great novelists in their respective literary periods. For the limit of time, only excerpts from 3 representative novels are chosen for our discussion. The novels selected for each novelist are:
(1) Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels (Book I & Book II, and Book IV)
(2) Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
(3) Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice
Additionally, we will watch several filmic adaptations of novels in the class. The instructor will offer key study questions for students to discuss. Students therefore shall pay attention to the difference between the original and the adapted ones, to the agenda of the director, as well as to the effects on the viewers/readers.

Course Requirements
1.Each student must attend the class regularly. I will call your name when the class starts after five minutes
2. Each student just has four times to apply leaving throughout the whole semester; over the quota, except for family or medial emergency, you should not be absent without providing any proofs of leaving within two weeks. 全學期可以提請假四次，之後請假除了家庭或醫療以及重要事故 (含公假) ，必須提供相關證明方與准假。缺席者限2周內提出申請銷假， 逾時不予受理。Proof of leave must be submitted (within a week) with a 250-word report in English to explain your absence.
