This course introduces students to English-Chinese translation, with primary focus on English-to-Chinese translation, moving from foundational concepts and traditional practice toward AI-assisted translation.
In the opening weeks, students are introduced to core translation concepts (e.g., text-type considerations and the process of transfer and restructuring in translation), before shifting focus to a systematic comparison of linguistic and cultural differences between English and Chinese and the application of essential translation techniques through guided exercises using traditional human translation methods, without AI assistance.
In the following weeks, students develop machine translation post-editing (MTPE) skills through guided classroom practice, before the course culminates in an individual AI-assisted translation project, in which each student works with an authentic English-language informational text and produces a Chinese translation intended for real instructional use, documenting their translation and revision process.
Through this traditional-first methodology, students develop comprehensive translation competence, enhance critical thinking about language and technology, and gain insight into contemporary professional translation practice.
Language of Instruction: This course uses both English and Chinese for instruction and materials; it is not an English-medium course. Students should have a high level of proficiency in both English and Chinese.
