This course is a general survey of British Victorian literature. Although the era was distinguished by novels, we will focus on poetry, prose, and drama instead. While reading texts of different genres, we will pay special attention to some important Victorian issues, such as gender, industrialism, science, imperialism and social critique. It is expected that students will be equipped with a basic understanding of Victorian literature and culture. The engagement in reading and critical analysis of literary texts and the exploration of Victorian issues will also sharpen students' overall keenness in reading comprehension, logical reasoning and insights into the issues in the past and the present, between the West and the East.
