This course aims to help students become familiar with the diverse historical, cultural, and religious backgrounds of Western literature so that they will be better equipped to study English and American literature during their sophomore and junior years. This semester, we will focus on the Bible—both the Old and New Testaments—and its influence on Western literature. Several films based on biblical narratives will also be shown and discussed in class.
