The purpose of English Listening and Speaking IV is to provide students with regular practice in listening to and speaking English. To that end it will emphasize pronunciation, stress, intonation, vocabulary, and conversation patterns as well as common errors due to first-language interference. Class time will be spent primarily on textbook exercises, small-group conversation and subsequent reports, group and individual presentations including debates, and individual speeches. Overall, the course will be student-centered in the sense that students will do much more talking than the teacher. Between classes, students will be expected to review and complete assignments begun in class and to read and practice the materials assigned for the following class period.
